Tips For Finding The Perfect Theatre Seating For Your Home Screening Room

By Aimee Schwartz

When setting up a home movie theatre, many consumers tend to focus most of their attention and budget on the audio and visual components, which are of course important, but so are the seats. The style, design, and layout of the theatre seating plays a bigger role in the total viewing experience than some may realize, which is why homeowners need to make sure they give consideration to each of these key points when selecting it.

The first thing which must be established is the amount of space and shape of the room which is to become the theatre. It is necessary to measure its total dimensions. The seating will need to fit through one's hallways and doors, so these too must be measured. About 18-24 inches should be left between seats, and there needs to be enough space left to walk around in the room.

Seats need to placed in such a way that they provide the audience with a comfortable viewing angle and distance from the screen. These important numbers can be calculated with a formula which was devised for this purpose, and are based on the size of the screen. If the room is on the smaller side, it is best to first select the seating, and then match it to the most suitable size screen.

Depending on the particular manufacturer, seating can be either pre-made or made-to-order, with power or manual adjustment. In terms of fabric, leather is the material of choice, but there are also options in vinyl, microfiber, or leather-match. Some seats may also come with the possibility of having bass shaker systems installed inside them, which provides physical sensation to accompany the sound and action of what's on the screen.

The seat configuration can be either full recline, which allows full leg extension, or a simple 5-inch recline. Many people prefer the "wallhugger" style of seats which provide maximum comfort while occupying minimal space. A hardwood frame gives seating long-lasting durability, and plush cushioning lets absorb more sound, which enhances the total audio performance.

Besides the maximum seating capacity, the room's dimensions also determines what the ideal size of each seat should be, and the way in which they are arranged in the room. Viewers can sit beside each other if space allows, or it may be necessary to form rows of seats. If additional rows are anticipated, 20 inches of space need to be left on the side of each row.

If there are two rows of seats, the installation of a platform or riser is recommended for optimal viewing. Another option is alternate seat spacing, so the back seats are positioned in between those in the front row. When there is only one row, a curved arrangement is ideal, since it is designed to provide all viewers with a view comparable to that in the coveted center seat.

There is a large and varied selection of seating styles, colors, and finishes to suit the personal decor tastes of any consumer. It's also possible to include some fun, useful features such as cup holders, snack trays, and storage compartments. Buyers should ensure that they receive a manufacturer's warranty at the time of purchase.
