Knowing When You Need High Rise Window Cleaners

By Stella Gay

The glass, in your commercial building, gets dirty every day. At some point they are dirty enough you and your employees can not see out of them. This is all because of the wind and rain that blows dirt and other material unto them. That building, depending on the height, may need basic window cleaning experts or, if much taller than that, might need high rise window cleaners

You have seen window jockeys working on the glass on many first floor or low buildings. They will clean the windows with a few tools, along with a pole. Many of them will use a self contained water supply, often with deionized water to eliminate chemicals being introduced. The occasional need for a scissor lift, for some glass, is common, especially if there is a flat surface to operate on.

Floors above the third can be cleaned by using a boom truck. This is a machine that has large tires and can get into position to lift a cleaner up higher than a pole or a scissor lift can. Anything higher than what can be reached by these pieces of equipment are termed high rise and need specialized training and some fairly complicated rigging.

When the high rise buildings need window cleaning, most of them already have the particular anchors needed installed on their roofs. One of these systems, probably one of the most unpopular one, allows for the repelling of the cleaner down the side of the building. This is a block and tackle system, with pulleys on the roof and another pulley on the flexible chair.

The ropes are secured to an anchor, set in the roof of the building. The set up has a block and tackle that will allow the rope to be fed down and holds the rope, securely. The cleaner has another block, located at his level with a lock that can secure the chair at any height he desires.

A gondola system is popular and run by a similar system, on the roof, however, it is aided by an electric motor that does the lifting and lowering. This platform is manned by more than one person, usually, and can be lowered to the appropriate position and locked into place. The cleaning can be done and then the whole platform will be lowered to the next floor down.

Regardless of the height of the glass and what is used to get up there or down there, the process for cleaning is the same. The few tools that need to be used are simple. They include a bucket or belt holster, a wet bar and a couple of cloths. Some will also include a window knife for hard to remove substances.

The cleaning begins with getting the glass wet, using the wet bar. The window is then scrapped, if needed, with the knife. The next step is the show a lot of people like to watch. This squeegee is used in many different ways, some them starting at the top and coming straight down and others swirling back and forth across the surface, ending at the bottom.
