How And Why Sexism In Sports Exist

By Enid Hinton

While reviewing a recent article, it was interesting to note the difference between salary caps in the NBA and WNBA. The cap for the WNBA $82,000, the cap for the NBA, 57M. It is clear by these figures that there is a great disparity with regards to equal pay when it comes to women and sexism in sports.

Though, money is not the only issue, there are also others. For the most part, save for the new Assistant Coach of the Spurs, there have been few women active on any professional sports teams other than the WNBA. While this is the case, there are a number of women who would love to participate in other sports, or at the very least be accepted as a member of the organization in an administrative, management or ownership role.

Reports show that different sponsors often also pay women less in benefits than male counterparts. Women who demand equality may want to look for sponsors work on a commission oriented basis. Only then, can one can assure that the benefits for promoting a product, team, service or event are equal in pay to others providing the same service.

Two areas in which teams are still mostly masculine compared to other sports in which the broadcasters and players seem to have soften over the years are hockey and football. Whether due to risk of injury, or denial based on sex, these two sports are often quite brutal compared to baseball, basketball and others.

While some girls may be able to play football, those in private schools may not have the same chance unless sponsored and supported by the institution in which one is enrolled. If not, then the girls at the school have only one option, change the mind of the administrators. A task which is often hard in public schools, much less private.

One area in which women have broken into the field, though are still receiving less in the way of salaries than me is sports broadcasting. There are a few women broadcasters in the NBA, as well as the WNBA, and a few in other sports. Though, overall the percentage is also less when it comes to the number of female versus male broadcast personalities providing live information on television during live games.

Another area in which women in sports are overlooked is in relation to sponsors. Generally, while a player gets a great deal of money for wearing a brand, or promoting an event, it is quite a large sum. It is no doubt that the same issues relate to sponsors as well as those in upper echelons of the sporting world. Sponsors which work on a commission oriented basis with both sexes often do pay players a commission that is the same across the board.

The more women who are informed, and recognized the severity with regards to salaries and salary caps not only in the NBA but all professional teams, the better chance there will be more equalized pay in the future. Otherwise, the trend in which men are paid higher than women not only in sports but all areas will continue to see the trend continue
