Most people who abuse alcohol know the reasons why they need to give up drinking, but the how continues to puzzle even this most diligent person amongst us. Maybe you've made a huge legal mess or you've lost another job. Its possible that you were abandoned by both your partner and family members because of your actions. Whatever your reason is, its time to take a good look at yourself and finally be certain to stop drinking alcohol.

Alcoholics normally know that they have to give up the bad habit. Nonetheless, admitting it is much easier than doing something about it. Lots of individuals who drink heavily know deep down inside that they have a problem.

You will fail if you don't follow the methodical process to quit drinking alcohol.

First, you have to admit to yourself that you should stop drinking.

It could help if you write down all the reasons you could think of to stop drinking alcohol. Don't leave anything out, tell the whole story. Be sure and include anyone you hurt, how embarrassed you are, and any damage you have caused. Put this paper in a safe place so that you can read it if you need to expel any doubt that your have to stop drinking alcohol.

While you are at it, try to figure out how much liquor costs you: to buy, to go to bars, in legal fees, and in lost earnings. Check your credit card statements and your budget; do not just make up numbers. Alcohol abuse is detrimental in numerous aspects - physically, mentally and financially.

This kind of honest introspection is something you would have to get used to in order to come to terms with your life and recover fully. You will know when its the correct time to quit.

Get to a Doctor

The damage done to your body is something only a doctor can evaluate. Your doctor could also evaluate how you should quit drinking. Its either doing it by yourself or going to a hospital with medical supervision.

Tell People (that understand)

Another great method to quit drinking is to tell trusted people that will understand that you are going to give up drinking and you might need their support. If you need help, these people would be there for you.

Find Meetings

12 Step Meetings is a great place to meet others who have gone through the same thing you're going through. Searching for 12 Step meetings in your neighborhood will get you started. Different meetings draw different individuals. Attend a lot of meetings all around your neighborhood; in fact, you should attend 90 meetings in ninety days. In these meetings, you will be given important info on quitting.

If you have reached this point then that is something to be very proud of. Just continue to be strong and fight the cravings...live a life without alcohol in your body.
