What You Need To Know About Mine Surveys

By Patty Goff

Mining is a delicate activity that involves burrowing the earth to extract minerals. Before any extraction work commences, the mine has to be examined by experts. The professionals involved come from various educational backgrounds relevant to mining. The role of these experts is to design and plan the activities to be carried out in the mine. The experts can be hired as consultants or they may be employees of the mining entity. Mine surveys are a crucial part of the excavation process.

During the survey, the experts get the most accurate information. The details they collect are used to gauge whether the mining area is safe. Managing the excavation process properly is crucial to prevent any accidents that might occur. It is common for accidents to occur in quarries. Although it is hard to prevent an accident, the effects can be mitigated with proper planning.

Experts involved in the survey are highly educated individuals. Education fields of engineering, architecture and mathematics are relevant to mining. Apart from educational training the experts should have on the job training. They spend a lot of time in mining sites in order to have a practical understanding of what happens. In modern times, mining zone surveyors are required to have university degrees. However, mine workers without university education but with lots of experience can work as quarry surveyors.

The objective of surveying is to create maps for use during mining. These maps are accurate about the topography of the mining site. Maps are created from the information gathered during the survey. Boundaries of the quarry should be clearly marked to avoid encroaching on land belonging to other people.

Quarry surveyors use the same tools as those used in surveying to get the necessary details. Most of the data is collected at the quarry site. Topographical information is gathered and then used to create maps that will guide the mining operations. The experts plan the work to be carried on and below the earth surface.

Mining is critical and the authorities are interested in it. The company conducting the survey will have to seek licenses in order to be allowed to proceed with the excavation. They will need to provide plenty of explanations to support their cause. The ability of the surveyor to communicate effectively is therefore important to ensure the process is not blocked for any reason.

Surveying on the mining section is not a one-off process. This is because changes to the environment around the mine can affect operations. Any change should be evaluated thoroughly to ensure its effects do not affect operations negatively. Every change in circumstances has to be recorded for reference in planning. Change can be as a result of human activities or natural occurrences such as earthquakes.

It is the duty of the mining area surveyors to ensure operations on the site run smoothly. These experts are permanently engaged on site as long as the quarry remains operational. There is plenty at stake in the quarries. Therefore, the experts should be there at all times to ensure nothing goes wrong.
