Job Description For Medical Tourism Facilitator

By Leslie Ball

When people hear the word tourism, the first thing that comes to mind are splendid beaches and beautiful travel destinations. But when it is attached to the word medical, the definition changes immediately. Medical tourism is a different kind of tourism despite having the same need for travel such as the traditional meaning of the word. Medical tourism means that there is a need for a person to travel to other countries to find the best treatment for their condition.

The concept has been around for quite some time but the popularity that it has is continues to increase. The need for travel can be caused by varying reasons. People from more developed countries do this because third world nations have cheaper fees. It is also being done to acquire treatments and procedures that are not yet available in any hospital from the country or if the procedure is not allowed by the law. You will need a medical tourism facilitator to arrange things for you if you have plans of getting treated in another place.

They are far different from travel agents because they have direct connections to medical facilities as well as information regarding the operations. They even have various connections to different surgeons that can handle specific surgeries when needed. In short, all of the information that you might need to know can be answered by these people.

Training is a prerequisite before one can be called a facilitator. It is true that they are the bridge that connects both parties and information regarding the services being provided. But they also need to know what goes on in the surgery proper to provide their clients with the background of what is about to happen.

Most of the time the patient would be asking how much the cost of the treatment would be. And you have to provide them with an estimate. Quotes vary depending on the condition of the person and the complexities that they are experiencing. Aside from that, you also have to include some other expenses such as travel costs so that they will have an idea about the probable cost for their trip.

It is essential that the records of the patient be transferred to the hospital in charge of the treatment. This is a standard operating procedure for of the local hospitals. And this should also be strictly observed for all of the transfers no matter what the place is. It might even get more complicated if the transfer is done overseas.

The patients are the people who will choose the facilitator. They are the ones to decide if they want to have your services or not. Before they fly to your country, you have to let them speak with the surgeon that they have chosen to discuss the details of the operation and treatment.

The travel arrangements of the client is one of the things that you have to take care of as facilitator. This will also include the place where they will stay. All of these should be arranged or managed by you since this might affect the health of the patient.

Following up the condition of the client is essential. It is not a gesture of customer service but one of the responsibilities as a facilitator. You have to be certain that there are no complications right after the surgery and everything is fine when they arrived.
