Racism In Sports Media And How It Is Perceived

By Mattie MacDonald

There are many different kinds of people in this world. Though we are the same human beings having the same physical features, distinction arises either from the language people speak or from the colour of their skin. These differences are what that brings about the issue of races. For one reason or another, there are those who think that they are better than others just by how they look. This runs all the way and hence spreading racism in sports media.

There are certain aspects in the society that are held responsible for bringing the aspect of unity among people. Media is such a device where people can communicate and share information from whatever part in the world that they may be situated at. One of the major issues of discussion is sports. Here, due to certain ignorant people, hate is preached in these games via the same instrument that was supposed to bring oneness.

A good example is in social networks which has come up in recent days. Here, people feel free to express their opinions in whatever way they like. They assault the players on these sites, calling them names and sometimes go as far as referring them using their real names. This is a huge setback to the sportsmen who are sometimes discouraged.

During the big games, players from different countries are engaged to participate. There are other times when language becomes a barrier as the players are of a different language and are not equipped with translators to commentate on these games for them. This has been an issue for only certain languages which draws back the problem to discrimination.

The information that is delivered to the various recipients all depends on who is giving out such information. How deliverance is done can affect the ideas that are put in the heads of people. Since most the reporters are white, they tend to pass racial information majorly when it comes to black athletes. Some go to as far as saying how much they do not work hard for what they have and this is not right as the public now believes these speculations.

Although the issue of racism is still rampant, it cannot be compared to how it was in the early years; previously, when this was a real disaster. Media houses have had to come up with guidelines that minimize the use of discriminatory language and setting up of ethical codes that see to it that these small ethical communities are protected.

Another example of this kind of evil is how these journalists handle scandals. Just because a certain athlete is of a particular origin and has made it to the very top achievers list, some are not at ease with this; they therefore wait with anticipation for the very little bit of downfall of the person and make sure that their name is tarnished among their fans and this can really affect the career of the involved party.

The relationship between racial discrimination and sport media is tight. Research has shown that a contributing factor can be the fact that the various media avenues that cover sports are mainly composed of the white. To curb this predicament, an equal balance should be kept while hiring reporters to include all.
