Kenai River Lodge Is Perfect For An Angling Trip

By Mattie MacDonald

Keen anglers know all about the Kenai Peninsula in Southern Alaska. It's legendary salmon are unusually large and the season lasts all summer. The Kenai River Lodge is the perfect spot for a hassle free angling trip as it has all the amenities you will need right in the heart of the action.

The Peninsula lies just south of Anchorage so it is easy to get to, just three hours by road. The lodge is just off the Sterling Highway so is easy to find. However, its proximity to the capital and road network does not spoil the feeling of remoteness enjoyed there. The population of the whole region is less than 60 000 people and you can hike for days without seeing anyone.

King salmon is the most sought after fish in the river. They can grow to huge sizes so the area is fantastic for trophy fishing, do not forget your camera. The King salmon has two runs from may to June so check with local guides exactly when the best time to arrive will be for the fish you wish to catch or the angling technique you prefer. For example, if you like fly fishing the shallow waters of the early season will be best.

Timing is probably best decided according to the type of fishing you prefer. If fly fishing is your thing then best to travel when the river is low at the beginning or end of the season. If you want to catch one of those giant Kings then you better head out in June or July when the river is high and the big boys are making the last run.

The local town is called Soldotna and is close to the lodge. It is the regional capital and has all the facilities for anglers and tourists. There are plenty of shops and restaurants along with places to get information on the local area with museums and visitors centers.

In a relatively small area the peninsula includes a number of different types of wilderness. There is plenty to do apart from fishing. There are numerous national parks with glacier covered mountains, pristine streams and big game. Many species of large mammal can be seen in the region including, black and brown bears, moose, caribou, lynx and lots of bird watching opportunities. There are also locations for canoeing on the fjords and white water rafting.

The lodge on Kenai River has incredible river views from all rooms. These vary from singles to comfortable doubles and there is even a suite with catering facilities. Anglers need places to store and process their catch and you will find everything you need here. There is also a fire pit and grills to do some outdoor cooking.

For a fantastic fishing experience the Kenai River is a great place to go. Salmon is the main catch but anglers will be amazed by the range of species and the size of the fish. The area is easy to reach yet is an unspoiled wilderness of incredible beauty. Other activities include hiking, bird watching, canoeing, mountain biking and rafting.
